Trojans Hockey Club has a proud history of producing talented young players that go on to achieve great things. Alex Danson is among many Trojans juniors that have represented England whilst at Trojans. Trojans junior teams have been successful in Hampshire, South and National competitions alike. Our junior section has expanded massively over the past six years and the club has big plans to ensure that this development continues in the future.

Trojans U16 Boys had an unbeaten outdoor season in 2022-3, winning both the EH Tier 1 U16 Championship and EH Tier 1 U16 Supra League Championship.

Trojans U16 Girls reached the semifinals of the EH Tier 1 U16 Championship and finished 3rd at the Junior U16 Supra League Finals 24/25.

Trojans runs weekly coaching sessions during the hockey season (September to April) for all age groups from Under 8s through to Under 16s. The Under 18 age groups train with the adult teams during the week. Each age group follows the Trojans Junior Coaching Syllabus designed to develop a wide skill base.

Joining Trojans Hockey

If you’d like your child to join Trojans Hockey Club, please ‘Register Now’ in the Teamo app. If a place is available they will be added to the appropriate squad for their age and you’ll then be able to see details of training sessions and fixtures as well as receive information from the team manager and coaches. Sometimes we have to maintain a waiting list for some of the age groups – you’ll be contacted when a place becomes available.

New members can attend 3 free training sessions. After this, you’ll be asked to pay for membership.

The club uses Teamo to manage all training sessions, matches, payments for membership and match fees so it’s important for parents and guardians to install the app and allow notifications.

What to Bring

It’s essential that each player has a mouthguard, hockey shin pads (football shin pads do not protect ankles) and a water bottle. New players are welcome to borrow a stick to try for the first few sessions. Shoes can be trainers, but preferably Astro shoes, and must not be studded. The club intends to run second-hand kit sales at the start of the season to help new players and reduce waste. To help reduce the initial costs of playing hockey we also offer hockey sticks & shin pads to be borrowed. For hygiene reasons mouth guards must be provided and these are also available to buy onsite at Muddy Boots cafe.

Juniors can train in any suitable sports clothing, though many like to wear a Trojans hooded top in the winter months. For matches, we ask that they wear navy shorts / skorts and red socks. Trojans versions are available to purchase, but not compulsory. Trojans kit is available from our kit suppliers as described here. Club socks (Home and Away) , hats and other accessories can be purchased through the Trojans Club shop online via https://trojans-hockey.square.site/.

We ask players representing the club at all ages to wear a Trojans match shirt. These can be purchased from https://trojans-hockey.square.site/. We ask players over this age to purchase their own numbered match shirt from here. Email clubkit@trojanshockey.co.uk to be allocated a shirt number.

Additionally, older players playing in leagues against teams further-afield may be asked to have their own white away shirt and white socks for away matches.

Junior Fees

The fees for 2025/26 are detailed below. Membership fees cover all training sessions (approx. 30 per season) and include membership of Trojans club and access to the bar and changing facilities. Members of more than one Trojans section are only asked to pay the Trojans club membership fee once. In addition, juniors are asked to pay £6 per match they play on Sundays. The match fee for Juniors playing in Senior games on a Saturday is £7.

Under 5s: £5 per session. We do not charge an annual fee for this age group.

Under 8s, 10s, 12s: £185 per year (Trojans club: £100 + Hockey membership: £85 for 2025/26 season)

Under U14s, U16s, U18s: £195 per year (Trojans club: £100 + Hockey membership: £95 for 2025/26 season)

Fees are paid within the Teamo app, in three installments. Open Teamo, click your profile image top right, click Payments and see the Payments Due section.

At Trojans we're continually trying to make hockey more affordable, especially for younger juniors just starting to discover hockey. If you're a low income household that would like to be considered for a fee discount please contact email juniormembership@trojanshockey.co.uk (we will ask for some financial info to be provided).

Opportunities to play in Senior Teams

Juniors over the age of 13 are able to train with the senior teams during the week, and may be selected to play matches on Saturdays. (Senior match fees are reduced to £7 for junior players.)

Trojans Junior Performance Programme (JPP)

We're pleased to continue the Trojans Junior Performance Programme (JPP) which we started in the 2024/25 season. This is an extra weekly 90 min session (now Friday @ 5:30 @ KES Hill Lane pitch) intended to push the boundaries of our best U12 and U14 players offering specialised, high-intensity training sessions that go beyond the standard weekly team training. This program is tailored specifically for advanced players who demonstrate exceptional skill, commitment, and a desire to excel in the sport. Through focused drills, strategic gameplay, and personalised coaching, participants will be challenged to refine their techniques, enhance their tactical understanding, and elevate their overall performance. This additional training aims to cultivate a competitive edge, preparing our players to compete at higher levels with confidence and proficiency.

These sessions will be run by our most experienced coaches headed up Dave Miles, our Head of Junior Coaching @ Trojans supported by leading coaches from our Mens 1s and Ladies 1s teams.

The JPP is offered by invite to our best players in the relevant age groups. JPP is an additional annual charge of £150 for 2025/26 season above and beyond the Trojans hockey membership. This additional fee covers the lower ratios of coaches, pitch costs, and potential indoor training. If you have further questions about the JPP please contact juniorchair@trojanshockey.co.uk.

Community Outreach Programme

Trojans is committed to providing free hockey coaching in our local primary schools not only to provide a useful service but also to secure the next generation of hockey players.

Our team of coaches are introducing the sport to hundreds of children each season. They are aiming to enthuse the children about hockey and to have some fun learning the basics of the game. Whether it is an after school club or PE lesson we strive for each and every child to have a positive experience. We organise follow up tournaments on the Trojans astro and ask schools to communicate with the children and their parents about how to join the club.

We are indebted to our enthusiastic team of volunteer coaches as well as to the PE leads and School Games Organisers that help make this dream a reality. We have benefitted from England Hockey Association advice and have bought equipment using funds from the Pete Atkins Trust. Should you wish to get involved as either a coach, school or sponsor please don't hesitate to get in touch.

This year we have visited Stoneham Park, Stoke Park, St Francis and Highfield schools.

"Trojans Hockey club delivered fantastic, inspiring lessons for our Year 4 class. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and I have a lot of children now asking if we can have a hockey club. The coaches were very engaging and thoughtful. They learnt majority of the children's names in a few sessions, which added that personal touch. We would be delighted to have Trojan's Hockey club return to our school. "

Team Selection, Playing Up & Playing For Multiple Teams

Trojans allows players to play up an age group where the coaches agree it is suitable for the player. However, in most cases, players should play for their own age group as a priority, unless otherwise decided by a senior coach. England Hockey rules state that players cannot play for 2 junior teams on the same day (GKs have exceptions). Juniors are also limited to 3 full-length matches per weekend (including senior, junior and school games) and must not play twice in one day if they attending TA on the following Monday.

Regarding playing for a different aged squad than a player’s birth date denotes, the Club’s policy is that:

  • where a player is skilled enough and physically mature enough they may be permitted to train with an older age group. In these instances players will play for the squad that they train with.
  • a player will only be eligible to play in 1 In2Hockey squad.
  • returning to play with the younger age group for In2Hockey is at the coaches’ discretion and a discussion will be had between the head coach and parents. The player will be expected to train and play with the younger age group in the run up to the tournament.

Some of the key England Hockey rules are:

  • Players cannot play in more than one age group on the same weekend. Except i. where a player doubles up to play in at least one match as a fully kitted GK.
  • For cups: Players whose last match was in Tier 1 competition can only move down one team at that age group within the same club.
  • In the U14, U16T2 and U18 knockout competitions a player becomes ‘cup tied’ to a team at an age group after their first appearance in a competition at that age group. Once cup-tied they can only represent the same team, or higher teams in future rounds of the competition
  • Players may not play more than 3 full length matches in a weekend, including Saturday league hockey, school matches.
  • For area leagues: Players may not play in the same age group on the same day

Get Involved!

The Junior section relies on volunteers to be successful and we have an amazing group of people who already donate their time and energy to junior hockey. Please get in touch with juniorsecretary@trojanshockey.co.uk if you are able to help with coaching, umpiring or team management, even if you’re not able to commit every week or for every match.
